Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then found many other marked vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state preliminary tests show the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; officials are presently not informed of any injuries in association with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to unravel the case" and have asked to the residents for information.
A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism rendered him without words and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the killing of nine people by a shooter targeting people of migrant background in February 2020.
