Doris Included in Irish Selection While McCarthy Left Out

Rugby squad announcement news

Returning manager Andy Farrell has selected skipper Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall Tests, but lock McCarthy misses out.

The captain, who has not played since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be fit to play against New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot issue he sustained during the opening Lions Test against Australia in the summer.

Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Nash are also absent because of fitness concerns, and number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation following the summer tour.

Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped member in the 34-player group, however Irish rugby authorities says new provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "cover".

After playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their 2016 meeting, Ireland will play Japan, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said the coach, back to Ireland duty after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a largely experienced squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the starting number 10 spot. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, as the two players poised to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's United Rugby Championship game at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the third fly-half chosen as Farrell opting against selecting the province's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has picked Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led Ireland to the summer Test victories over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran group of centre choices. Osborne is another option in the centres, though the 23-year-old is additionally a leading candidate to cover for Keenan at number 15.

Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Irish forwards. The front rower has started two of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship games this season and played in Ireland A's loss by the English in the English city earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a international appearance.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, and experienced Ulster lock Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions matches over the summer, is set to deputise for Doris should the skipper does not regain full fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.

The national team will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before traveling to the US on Tuesday.
